Abstract

As an adolescent, Thomas moves with his family from the mountains of the tidewater region of Virginia and he sees for the first time wealthy planters who own grand house and Negro slaves. Ignorant of aristocratic southern social code prevalent in his new home, he believes himself equal to his neighbors until a chance errand taught him otherwise. When delivering a message to plantation house, a liveried black servant told him to go around back of the house, thus destroying his naive view of life. Realizing for the first time his true social stature, he decides to fight fire with fire
