SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND STATUS CHANGE AMONG SCHEDULED CASTES IN HIMACHAL PRADESH : A CASE STUDY OF SHIMLA DISTRICT

Abstract

The primary objective of this study to analyze the nature and type of relationship between social structure and status change among scheduled castes in Himachal Pradesh, predominantly a Hindu society representing overwhelming percentage of Hindus with their deep faith in religion, religious practices rites and rituals and beliefs in purity and impurity. The other religious denominations, namely Sikhs, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians and others constitute minorities. While it is difficult to figure out scheduled castes among Muslims, Buddhists, Christians and Jains in Himachal Pradesh but the Sikhs have scheduled castes among them. The scheduled castes constitute 24.72 per cent of the total population of the state. They have been the victims of caste inequalities, discrimination and have been subjected to untouchability and social, economic and political exclusion for ages.
