Abstract

Lac is unique gift of nature to the mankind. Lac is a natural, biodegradable, non-toxic, odorless, tasteless, hard resin and non-injurious to health. Lac is used in manufacture of glazed paper, printing and water proofing inks, lac bangles, dry mounting tissue paper, dental plates and optical frames. It is also used as a coat for metal ware to prevent tarnishing and for finishing various products such as playing cards, oil cloth and linoleum and for preserving archeological and zoological specimen. Lac cultivation is simple, free from high technology and does not need large investment.. Sustained attention on the lac cultivation leads to the high sustained production and steady returns achieved by adopting improved methods of cultivation. Lac insects are cultured on such host trees which are capable of growing in wastelands.
