Abstract

Existentialism is a study of human existence. It is a doctrine of action. Life is nothing until it is lived; it is a man that gives meaning to it. Existentialism is concerned with the individual search for the meaning of his/her life through free will, choice and personal responsibility in the world. It is a philosophy which asserts that we are thrown into this world in order to make our meaning of life and our own value. This research paper focuses on the reflection of “existentialism” in Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea. The concept of hero whose triumph consists of stretching his own powers to their absolute limits regardless of their physical results gives The Old man and the Sea an existential approach. It confronts us with the man who is not capable of making an ultimate effort but makes it successfully and continuously.

Feminism helps us understand and challenge the oppression of women. Feminist theories attempt to analyze women's oppression, its causes and consequences, and suggest strategies and directions for women's liberation. By the mid 1970s, feminist writers had raised the issues that patriarchal modes of thinking encouraged not only widespread inferiorizing and colonizing of women, but also discriminate against animals and nature. According to Sheila Collins sexism, racism, class exploitation, and ecological destruction are the four main factors which contribute to the ‘male dominated culture’.

Abstract

Indian sub-continent is a vast landmass replete with diverse geographical regions with its distinct vegetation and climate, inhabited by various races with its own specific culture and occupation commensurate with the ecology of the region. Inhabitants of these different regions since time immemorial lived in harmony with nature. This incorporation of nature in their life is represented in various ritualistic forms of worship i.e. tree worship, etc, and celebration of seasonal festivals associated with agricultural cycle i.e. sowing, harvesting time, etc. People had exploited nature initially for subsistence purpose and as population grew and civilization developed the needs of people led to an increased exploitation of resources but the process was gradual and not adversarial. The real weight of exploitation was felt after the colonization of India by European powers and its integration to the world capitalist system.

The home is the site of violence for women not only in marital relationships but also in various other relationships. Brothers evicting sisters and widows facing violence in joint families are familiar stories. In some measure disempowerment of women arises from unequal social structures perpetuated by a legal system where women do not still enjoy adequate and equal property rights. Although the common law recognizes the right to reside in the matrimonial home through judicial decesions, the right was not codified.1 In India right to shelter has been recognised as a fundamental right in the broad sweep of Article 21 of the costitution of India 1950,in the case of Shantisar builders v.Narayan khimlal Totame

Abstract

India is emerging as one of the world’s budding super-economies and at the same time its development is pulled back by poverty and illiteracy, the vicious cycle of which is very hard to break. Education can help to break this vicious cycle to a greater extent. But in India about 8.1 million children are out of formal education and they receive a single meal in a day. About 42 percent of the world's underweight children under age 5 are in India1. According to Jawaharlal Nehru “Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizen”. A country’s development depends upon the sound physical and mental growth of children. Without nutrition it is impossible to maintain a good health. Nutrition and physical absorption of food have several dimensions and depend upon a host of factors such as quality water, sanitation, health and quality of food itself. Public health services are inefficient and resource starved and private medical care is not affordable for the poorer sections of the population2. Chronic hunger can lead to malnutrition. Chronic hunger also delays or stops the physical and mental growth of children. Poor or insufficient nutrition over time means that children are too small for their age, and susceptible to diseases like measles or dysentery, which can kill malnourished children. Malnutrition adversely affects Universalization of Elementary Education particularly in rural areas.

The system demands new knowledge and skills from the teacher and head teachers. It also demands greater capability at the school level to respond to the emerging diversity in the student population and among those entering the teaching profession. In effect, changes in the characteristics of the system have made the role of the school teacher even more critical than what it was earlier. Has the State, which is the main provider of education in the country, responded to the changed reality? Has the teacher become more empowered? Have adequate efforts been made to equip the teacher to face the emerging challenges? What is the current reality with respect to status, roles and functions of the teacher and the head teachers in India?

Abstract

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of cold war changed the global Scenario. What could be now being the future International system? With national sovereignty weakened and super national international organizations gaining strength this process should at its extreme, end in a world government with a unipolar system. Slowly the changes towards the concept of a global village gained momentum. A unipolar world in the foreseeable future still seems improbable. Another kind of unipolar system envisaged is of a universal empire wherein one super power controls global hegemony, like the United States assuming global hegemony became apparent when President Bush proclaimed during the Persian gulf crisis (1990-1991) of a new world order based on American- soviet cooperation and greater reliance on international law and organization but the Unipolar world order poses such vital questions. Does it intend to be the only super power? Is it to be a newer world order one in which the Americans are the only super powers and if so what would be the responsibilities of United States.

Life expectancy has increased dramatically in the twentieth century. The world has witnessed an increase in longevity over a substantially long period of time. This increased life expectancy rate has brought with it new challenges in this millennium. We now have a large elderly population, resulting in more dependants as the population gets older. Due to the current living conditions, the number of institutionalized elderly persons has been growing considerably. The opportunities of an active life offered by institutions are very restrictive. The lack of physical stimulation in institutional care systems increases the probability of health and functional disorders in elderly population especially for elderly women, thus affecting their health related quality of life.

Abstract

Pedagogy is the science (and an art) of teaching. There is a general perception that literature is particularly complex and in accessible for the second/foreign language learner and can even be detrimental to the process of language learning. Teachers usually use an array of teaching strategies to make their lecture effective and communicative. The strategies of the teacher vary according to the level of the learners along with the skill s/he wants to teach. They need variety in order to reach all the students in the class. At the end after using lots of strategies, the question remains the same i.e. how will the teachers know that students truly understands and apply knowledge in an meaningful way? No doubt, the pedagogy is the answer of all these questions. Through this paper I have tried to explore not only the “how” of teaching English literature but the “what” and the “why” also.

The Act has given to Indian trade union movement legal sanctity, social status and organizational coherence hither to unknown. Legally trade unions could no more be regarded as conspiratiorial associations against the established law and order and good government. The code of discipline in Industry 1958 also tried to circumvent the defects of the Act by establishing new norms of human behavior for labour management towards each other to promote industrial democracy and industrial harmony.

India has an impressive heritage in the production and use of ferrous and nonferrous metal like Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper, and Zinc. Silver was almost used throughout as the basic metal for the Indian currency after the appearance of the metallic money, presently termed punchmarked coins in the 6th century B.C. Egyptian name for the silver is white gold. In some Samhitas and Brahmans, it is called rajat a hiranya. There are three stages in the history of silver. The remains of ancient mines and smelting furnaces located in the vicinity of today’s mining centers as well as the evidence of common occurrences of slage and few metals-working places presented by the unearthed ancient sites reflect men’s earliest Endeavour to recover and utilize these metals in the process of the cultural development.

Agriculture sector alone is not capable enough to provide employment opportunities. Therefore, there arose the need to explore new areas of employment generation. The solution to employment generation activity lies in leather industry development. India has the largest livestock population in the world. This livestock can be utilized as a development potential by India. After animal dies its skin can be stripped and is later converted into finished leather by tanning process. The exports of raw hides and skin will not only provide employment to both rural and urban youth but also help in earning huge foreign exchange. The present paper has tried to analyze the market power or share of various importing countries of raw hide and skin from India. The paper has further tried to study the Export Concentration Ratio of fifty five major countries of the world. If market power and export concentration are known then it will help in framing trade policies or Export import policies by government of India.

To measure stress, level Teacher Stress Survey (Malik, 1993) was used and coping behavior was observed by using Cope inventory (Carver, Scheier and weintraub in 1989).Coping behavior was assessed at two levels 1) Problem focused coping and 2) Emotion Focused Coping behavior. The results indicated that job related stress is significantly and positively related to problems with regard to students, parents, administration and to other teachers for the total sample as well as for both males and females. Overall, female teachers have been found to experience more stress than their male counterparts. However, male teachers have been found to e using more Problem Focused Coping Strategies and females have been found to be using more Emotion Focused Coping Strategies.

Abstract

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) can provide scalable and cost-effective solutions for applications such as traffic safety, dynamic route planning, and context-aware advertisement using short-range wireless communication. To function properly, these applications require efficient routing protocols. However, existing mobile ad hoc network routing and forwarding approaches have limited performance in VANETs. This dissertation shows that routing protocols which account for VANET-specific characteristics in their designs, such as position and mobility of Vehicle, can provide good performance for a large spectrum of applications. Increased vehicular traffic demands smart vehicles which can interact with each other and roadside infrastructure to prevent accidents. Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) provides this flexibility to the vehicles. In this desertion we initially analyze the performance of AODV and OLSR, and further we improve the performance of AODV by selecting the node on the basis of trust value of the successive nodes, we also reduce the neighbor hood expiry time and correspondingly update the route table of AODV, with this purposed approach we would be able to reduce the end-to-end delay of AODV sufficiently also the performance of AODV increase in terms of Throughput and packet delivery ratio.

Abstract

Poetry has the peculiar ability to manifest the complexity and divergence of a culture that has been subjected to regal colonialism (O'Reilly & Christopher 325). Decolonization has been an imperative paradigm for the conceptualization of postcolonial poetry. Decolonization movements spanned across Asian, African, and Caribbean regions, among many others particularly, during the Pakistan and Indian independence that was witnessed between 1947 and 1970s. Upon decolonization, diverse aspects of the imperial culture were ‘left behind’ in the imperial colonies (O'Reilly & Christopher 535). The native people did not do away with certain aspects of the imperial culture. For instance, they maintained and incorporated various mannerisms, and linguistic aspects that were introduced by the imperial colonizers prior to decolonization. Imperial culture inherited after decolonization affected crucial societal spectrumsin the former colonies. The economic, social, and political spectrums were subjected to tremendous changes.

When considering a fund's volatility, an investor may find it difficult to decide which fund will provide the optimal risk-reward combination. Many websites provide various volatility measures for mutual funds free of charge; however, it can be hard to know not only what the figures mean but also how to analyze them. Furthermore, the relationship between these figures is not always obvious. NSE i.e. National stock Exchange Index is the indicator of the economic activity of the country’s top companies during the definite period of time, whereas the FII purchase is the investment made by the foreign body into the domestic institutions in order to gain optimum revenues. This paper will study the Volatility between these two figures and the effect it has on each other.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the common metabolic disorders acquiring around 2.8% of the world's population and is anticipated to cross 5.4% by the year 2025 (Patel et al, 2012).Patients with non-insulin diabetes have been treated orally in folk medicine with a variety of plant extracts since time immemorial (Ivorra et al, 1989). A large number of plant products with potential hypoglycemic activity have been cited in the available literature. In few of these plant products hypoglycemic activity has been clearly demonstrated in animal experiments and human trials. The chemical constituents have been isolated in a few instances whereas in most plants the active constituent is yet to be identified. The present paper attempts to review some of the Indian plants with potential hypoglycemic effects.

The paper deals in credit risk management in which rating of credit risk is done in order to assess and control the overall loss within the limits sustainable by the capital of the bank which is very often referred to as the risk appetite of the bank. Effective credit risk management is a critical component of a bank’s overall risk management strategy and is essential to the long-term success of any banking organization. Having understood the broad parameters of the credit rating I have also learnt that there are various kinds of risks (both internal and external) involved in estimating the rating of a particular borrower or company which are the important factors which are to be taken into consideration to reduce the risk involved of default by borrower. The overall process of credit risk management includes four major functions risk identification, risk measurement, risk control and risk monitoring.

Abstract Street children may be considered as the children in the worst condition. They live in the streets or at least, spend a larger part of their lives in the streets. They may even earn and live off the streets. Often bereft of their families and home, lacking access to basic needs and comforts of life, these are the most marginalized lot of all the children in the urban areas. Hence, it was deemed necessary to make an assessment of the condition of such children in Bikaner city. A purposive sample of sixty eight street children was taken for the study. The results have been presented under various heads like attributes, pattern of street living, family connections, and attitudes and perceptions.
