Abstract

Legends neither die nor do they fade away. George Crabbe ought to be, rather is a living classic – for those who read him. Crabbe is a paradoxical figure whose works exhibits the same longing proof or truth, the same sympathy with the poor and the downtrodden which were going to be the source of Wordsworthian poetical reform, while maintaining a new lease of life to the classical tradition of form. Crabbe belongs to late Augustan age and early Victorian age; hence his works possess both the classical feature as well as the dilemma of Augustan age.
