Abstract

Shelter is one of the most important basic necessities of human being. This paper analyzes settelement pattern of Kembatti community from ethnographic perspective, focusing on the relationships between habitat, and settlement patterns. Fieldwork took place among five neighboring communities in three taluks of Kodagu District over one year. The methodology included ethnographic research, mapping land cover and house sites. The Kodagu district of Karnataka State is situated on the summits of the eastern and western slopes of the Western Ghats, on the south-western border of Karnataka and Kerala States. It extends from 11°, 56' to 12°, 52' North latitude and 75°, 22' to 76°, 12' East longitude. In the study region the settlements are distributed in a random pattern, and each village has several clusters of houses. The Kembatti houses are generally situtated close to their paddy fields and in some village houses are built along both sides of the road .
