Abstract

According to Gandhi, “Man is neither mere intellect, nor the gross animal body, nor the heart or soul alone. A proper and harmonious combination of all these three required for making of the whole individual and constitutes the true meaning of education.” The individual is the supreme one and most important to bring peace and harmony in the society. For Gandhi, education is inevitable element for character building and moral uprightness through which the best in an individual can be drawn. The notion of health and sanitation can be derived from the education. Health and sanitation are complementary to each other. Education on health and hygiene can be achieved by practicing his famous eleven vows and harmonious working of five prime elements of nature. Since, sanitation is more important than independence. For Gandhi, the conception of sanitation is not mere limited to cleanliness on physical level but it is also cleanliness and purification of our mind and spirit. In present day scenario, Gandhi’s dream to see India clean is still unfulfilled. Today’s education system in India is based on getting a livelihood which is not real goal of education. We have to elevate our consciousness level to higher level through the real essence of education which emphasizes the culture of peace, right feelings and emotions, social mindfulness , friendliness, sincere work attitude, socio-cultural progress etc.
