GENDER DIFFERENCE IN THE STUDY HABITS OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BORNO STATE

Abstract

Gender is the physical and attitudinal attributes that distinguishes the male from the female sexes. Gender difference could be defined as the stereotype of feminine masculine disparities. Gender is a concept that vividly portray certain characteristics and responsibilities peculiar to male and female as identified and accepted within the norms and cultures of a particular society. The study examined the gender difference in the study habits of students in Borno state senior secondary schools Descriptive survey method was employed in order to arrive at a significant and accurate information Study habits inventory (SHD) adopted version developed by Bakare (1977) was used for the student’s data on study habits. Two hundred (200) respondents were selected randomly for the study in six government schools in Borno state. The mean score, standard deviation, and t- test were employed in analyzing the data. The result of the study revealed that, there is a significant difference in the study habits between male and female. Male students have greater levels of study habits in most of the domains, specifically; Concentration, Test preparation and Test taking, reading speed, writing skills and Test anxiety while the students do not differ in their Time Management, Reading Comprehension and Note taking.
