Abstract

Emotional intelligence is a social insight that empowers individuals to perceive their own, and other people groups' feelings. Additionally, emotional intelligence empowers individuals to separate those feelings, and to settle on fitting decisions for considering and activity. The research study was undertaken to assess the Emotional Intelligence of B.Ed. teacher trainees, in general , and in specific to study the effect of medium of study, type of college and location of college on the emotional intelligence of B.Ed. teacher trainees. The B.Ed teacher trainees Emotional Intelligence was assessed by the investigators by adopting and modifying the Emotional Intelligence Rating Scale developed by Poornima, 2012. The descriptive survey method was used for the study. The investigators collected the data from 690 B.Ed teacher trainees studying in the B.Ed colleges affiliated to Bangalore University. The data obtained from the survey was analyzed by using mean, SD, mean ± 1 SD, percentage analysis and t-test. Findings of the study revealed that, out of 690 B.Ed. teacher trainees, 86 percent of the teacher trainees possess moderate and low level of emotional intelligence. The variable ‘medium of study’ has significantly influenced the emotional intelligence of B.Ed. teacher trainees; variable ‘type of colleges’ in which the teacher trainees are studying has significantly influenced their emotional intelligence; the B.Ed. teacher trainees studying in government/aided colleges are higher level of emotional intelligence than their counterparts studying in unaided colleges and; variable ‘location of the college’ has significant influence on the emotional intelligence dimension - self-awareness and emotional intelligence as a whole. The educational implications are given based on the above findings at the end of the research study.
