Abstract

The Govind Sagar Reservoir is a creation of artificial lake made up of Bhakra Dam in early years of our independence. It is both curse and blessing for the people of Bilaspur District. On one side it was responsible for submerging of most of the fertile lands of the district alongwith the mass uprootment of thousands of families belong to the then submerged villages on the other it becomes blessings for agriculturists of Punjab, Haryana and Rajsthan states where Bhakra dam ensure the irrigational facilities through its Indira Gandhi Canal. It is also responsible for providing and fulfilling the electricity & power needs of millions of families and thousands of small and large industries. For the local people living in the vicinity of this reservoir, it provides an opportunity to earn by fish catch from the lake waters. For the purpose, the registered cooperative societies were formed and the licences for fish catch were being provided by the department of fisheries right from the year 1972. For these years many societies were raised and thousands of families are chosen the fish catch activities. To assess the importance of this lake, this particular study was undertaken to look in to the working and performance of various cooperative societies. This study was basically based on the secondary data. The data collected from different sources was analysed through suitable statistical tools of analysis. The answer to the research questions are drawn through hypothesis testing. The study found that in Himachal, the cooperative societies of Govind Sagar Reservoir are the highest fish catchers in the Himachal Pradesh. Also this study found some distributional differences which need to be corrected.
