Abstract

This paper describes the ground paintings of India, known as Rangoli. These ground paintings made by Indian women during auspicious ceremonies and rituals are not merely decorative piece of art but also welcoming signs, expressions of happiness, description of desires and beliefs. Rangoli has also a cultural, psychological and spiritual significance. In different parts of India, ground paintings apart from forms and colors also vary in occasion of customs and traditions. Rangoli plays an important role in all the occasions like marriages and festivals. It is the artistic expression of the women through their own style and techniques. The prayers and beliefs are portrayed through these ground paintings. Women see their paintings as a mean of communicating directly with the gods. The ground paintings furnished with many symbols and patterns represents a way of viewing different perception of life. This ritual art ‘Rangoli’ is known by different names across India. The symbols, patterns and designs of Rangoli drawn on the ground have a magical power and presence.
