Abstract

Academic research and discourse in the area of women, work and issues pertaining to these have been going on since the 1980s. Much contribution has been made in terms of talking and writing about the idea of what constitutes women’s work and the invisibility surrounding it but the lived reality remains the same in most of the societies around the world in general and the developing countries in particular. This article looks at the problem of how despite the differences in economic backgrounds and classes, one cannot but accept that there are similarities in the patterns of problems and challenges faced by women across borders, cultures, classes, and races. It deliberates on the issue of social and economic dynamics that women encounter today, with special reference to the women street vendors at Dimapur Town in Nagaland, North East of India. To look at their ability to bargain a marketing facility in the urban space and maintaining a stoic stance in times of adversity. The work examines the attitude of indifference towards the nature of women and works by society, family, individuals, and women themselves
