Abstract

Water is one of the most important and vital natural resources available on the earth. It occupies the key position in the life of living organisms. It is the most essential component of existence of life and needed by human beings, plants and animals. In India major sources of fresh drinking water are river, stream, tank, pond, well, tubewell, municipal water supply etc. Thus a variety of fresh water ecosystem are available at most of the places in our country. Among them river play an important role in the lives of people because these are mostly used as sources of water for drinking, bathing, irrigation, cloth cleaning, recreation and other miscellaneous purposes. Importance of rivers are the chief sources of fresh water for drinking as well as fisheries.
