Abstract

From those days in which children's literature dwell simply on the oral stories that their elders told and by the turn of the century the entire scenario has changed, that is, plenty of works related to children appear on the market as well as through websites. Now children's literature has gained a stature of its own. On a different and more positive line, children's literature has benefited from society's thriving involvement in the child. As a result of this keen interest in children, more and more talented writers and illustrators have chosen to do their best work for children. The study of children's literature began seriously in the last quarter of the twentieth century. Professional organizations have emerged to promote the study of literature. The paper tries to trace the historical developments that lead to the growth of the children's literature in English.
