REGIONAL DISPARITIES IN THE LEVELS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN DISTRICTS OF MAHARASHTRA

Abstract

In India after independence benefits of development activities were not adequate for all classes of society and regions resulting into regional disparities and social inequalities. For an overall development of a nation, economic progress is an essential component Maharashtra is one of the most economically developed states, having a unique position in the country but all its districts are not at the same level of development. Maharashtra is a highly industrialized and developed state. But baring a few pockets of development like the Mumbai-Pune-Nashik belt, which is highly industrialized, and Nagpur the rest of the state is as backward or under-developed as any other region in the country. The main objective of this paper is to understand how socio-economic disparities among the districts in Maharashtra. To point out the regional (district and division wise) differences in socio-economic indicators such as per capita domestic product, functional structure of urban centres, number of small scale industrial units (SSI), employment in SSI units, human development index and industrial structure have been computed in these section.
