Abstract
Chakmas are one of the ethnic groups in Arunachal Pradesh with their distinct identity, are acutely conscious of their political status as Stateless People, who have been fighting for their citizenship right in the state for last forty five years. However, their demands have not been fulfilled by both the State and Central Government so far. The Supreme Court of India in a Public Interest Litigation filed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh delivered a judgment on 9th January 1996. But, even after two decade of that judgment, they are still struggling with statelessness and marginalisation due to the opposition of the State Government and a non-interventionist approach of the Central Government in implementing the judgment of the Court. This paper highlights the problems undergone by the Chakmas from the partition to till date and measures that can be taken in order to provide them with citizenship and bring an end to their struggle.
