Abstract

The present paper endeavours to delve into the inner psyche of ‘the other woman’ from her point of view in the novel ‘In the Country of Deceit’ by the renowned writer Shashi Deshpande. The female protagonist, Devyani, responds to the amorous advances of the newly posted, much married, Superintendent of Police, Ashok Chinappa. The paper tries to study the shenanigans and the challenges faced by her and how she dashes into the country of deceit as against the people around her. The paper also attempts to dissect the contention between what is right and what is wrong. The conclusion is in conformity with the novel’s conclusion that separation is the only future that the couple can think of.
