Abstract

The main objective of the current research study is mainly to assess an awareness level about government recognized schemes among unskilled and semi-skilled workers in an urban unorganized sector in a Bangalore city. In today’s scenario, almost 400 million people-more than 85% of the population in India working in an unorganized sector and their health care facilities is still negligible in a same sector. Contagious, infectious and waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, infectious, pneumonia and reproductive tract infectious has been observed especially in an unorganized sector. However, non-communicable diseases such as cancer, blindness, mental illness, hypertension, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, accidents and injuries are also on a rise. The health status of Indians is still a major cause of concern, especially of the unorganized sector and their access to health care facilities is still poor. Now the country is in the middle of dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases with the coupled of high cost and financial burden on the middle and poor class of the people which results in reduction on their income. Nearly 24% of people hospitalized in India annually are below the poverty line as a result of hospitalized financing. At the present stage, health insurance coverage is negligible that means most of the public funding used mainly for preventive and primary care programmes whereas private expenditure is for curative care (World Bank 2002). Therefore, there is a strong need to create awareness about government recognized schemes among unskilled and semi-skilled workers of an unorganized sector
