Abstract

In many prehistoric cultures, women supposed a particular cultural role. In hunter-gatherer societies, women were usually the gatherers of plant foods, small animal foods and fish. On the eve of independence, in his famous speech Tryst with Destiny, our first Prime Minister referred our country as our ‘motherland’ and demonstrated us the imaginings of a bright future he said ―a moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. The decades bracketing the turn of century have witnessed intense and unparalleled political contestations of culture, particularly in relation to women.
