Abstract

Modern Indian culture is composite in nature. It is neither entirely Buddhistic nor entirely Vadic or Brahmanical. Christian, Islamic and Zoroastrian traditions came to India from without and made significant contribution to Indian culture and civilization. A large number of elements in the Indian languages, arts religions and social customs of India have been contributed by primitive folks of India and the central Asians tribes of the Sythians, Kushanas, Hunas and the Tibetans. The dominant ideas in the formation of Indian culture, however, have been contributed mainly by two streams of thought, Shramanic and Brahmanic. When we talk about the Shramanic tradition, Buddhism is the most important among all traditions prevalent in India. Buddhism went a long way in influencing the Indian culture. The life and teachings of Buddha cast spell over the Indian mass. In due course of time Buddhism made great contribution to Indian society and culture. Now I will try to trace some important contribution of Buddhism to the Indian culture.
