Abstract

The power structure in villages is under transmission. The traditional leadership on lineage basis has lost the authority and new class of elected members is occupying the place of traditional leaders. The term ‘power’ itself is redefined in villages. The emerged money oriented village economy, increased literacy among the people of all castes, the gradual shift from traditional to commercial crops, increased connectivity of villages with the outer world, influence of urban area, spread of mass media and newly enacted government policies are redefining the meaning of power in Indian villages. Newly elected members have more priority in villages than the traditional leaders. This study is conducted in eight selected villages of Ramanagara district of Karnataka state located in southern part of India.
