Abstract

Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited is a state owned corporation that is into tourism and hospitality industry. Established in 1976 in the erstwhile state of Uttar Pradesh, the corporation now takes care of the tourism (that includes accommodation, hospitality and transportation) in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The corporation operates in almost the entire Grahwal region including the remote areas and is perhaps the only organization offering the tourists facilities to visit Garhwal. Tourism in this region is also of importance because of the presence of the religious sites like Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath shrines that are directly connected to the pilgrimage sites of Haridwar and Rishikesh. The paper examines the role played by the corporation in providing the necessary facilities to the tourists and pilgrims in this area. The satisfaction levels of the tourists classified by age, gender and education were calculated to arrive at suitable recommendations. The requirement of tourists were also assessed and examined to provide guidance for the future growth of the corporation. Apart from this, the role of corporation in providing employment to the local inhabitants of the region was also assessed.
