The research on urban poverty or slums have experienced a spurt in recent past and received considerable attention both internationally and nationally. The concept and the definition of a slum vary from country to country depending upon the socio economic conditions of a society. The universal characteristics of a slum refer to overcrowding and congestion, extremely poor sanitation, poor housing, poor people belong to lower strata of society with low literacy levels, choked drains, high density of insects and rodents, lack of garbage disposal facilities, poor personal hygiene, and hygienic conditions.
