DETERMINANTS OF PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHILD LABOURERS OF TELANGANA STATE

Abstract

The study was conducted in the rural areas of Ranga Reddy District of Andhra Pradesh. The sample selected comprised of 60 girls and 60 boys in the age range of 9-12 years. The criteria for the sample was to select the working children from rural areas. The tools used in the investigation included anthropometric tools. The means of the height and the means of the weights of the obtained data were compared with NCHS and ICMR standards. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is also calculated. A detailed interview schedule including the self and family related factors is used. Both girl and boy child labourers were found poor in their physical development with severe chronic energy deficiency. Moreover the girl child laborers in pre adolescent age are about to attain menarche are more susceptible to suffer from anemia. Family related factors and work related factors found to be significant determinants of physical development of both girls and boy child labourers. Sensitizing parents on importance of nutrition and impact of child’s work on his poor growth and development is the need of the hour. Motivation of the parents to send the children to school is the only recommendation.
