Abstract

Pakistan inherited parliamentary form of democracy from Britain and it adopted federal structure of governance. Since then, there have been multiple experiments on democracy in Pakistan and its post colonial experience with the process of democratization offers an ambivalent picture. The democracy in Pakistan is deeply affected by the popular social norms, cultural behaviour, radical Islam and political arrangements. It has also faced severe domestic crises as a result of demands from different ethnic groups that challenge state legitimacy and its economic development also remains insufficient. The principles of social justice and basic rights of citizens have been theoretically accepted, yet Pakistan faces high rate of human rights violation. Pakistan is often called a ‘failed nation’ in popular media because of democratic deficit in the structure and functioning of the institutions of state. It is also called ‘immature democracy’ as the democracy in Pakistan is neither strong nor stable.
