Abstract

Abstract: This paper is concerned with an investigation of the existing level of workers’ participation in management decision making with the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The present study was undertaken to study the effects of participation and involvement of workers in the management of industry. Participation means sharing the decision making power with the lower rank employee of the organization in an appropriate manner. In Yugoslavia it is called self management while in Germany it is called as co-determination. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has been encouraging members’ nation to promote the schemes of the workers ‘participation in management to beat the competition in market and to stay ahead of the competition. This form of management has been adopted by the many organizations. They welcome their innovative ideas concept and thoughts from the employees and involve them in decision – making. However, the idea could not gain much popularity among organizations. Studies have shown that only 3-5 per cent of organization have actually implemented this concept in their daily operations. Though, the theory of participative management is old as the institution of employees and employers is not applied by a large proportion of organizations. According to them employees misuse their freedom of expression and participation in decision-making as it provides higher status to employees and empowers them.
