Abstract

Abstract This paper studies the overall economic performance of five states within the Indian Economy that formerly formed the disgraced blocks of BIMAROU states, an acronym that has lost its significance over the years as the states indicated therein have put forward stunning growth performance over the years and no more are considered the laggards of the Indian Economy. This study in particular highlights the economic achievement of these states during the period 2004-12 also known as the high growth phase of the Indian Economy. The study parameters includes among others Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth of these states, movement in per capita Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) at constant prices, Sectoral Growth of the respective state economies, Debt outstanding and state finances. This paper is divided into six parts. In the first part of the study, economic performance of the states is being shown and a comparison has been made between the states. The second part of the study shows the accrual of state level debt of these state economies during this growth phase. The third part of the study reveals the movement in state finances of different states. The fourth part gives an analysis of whether the growth in these states has been inclusive or not. The fifth part includes some statistical hypothesis testing in order to capture the variability effect of growth performance amosng five states over the last ten years and the sixth part of the study gives the conclusion.
