Abstract

Premchand very sensitively depicts how women suffer in the patriarchal society that always gives subordinate positions to women and treats them as second-rate citizens. There can be no question that the agony and suffering of a woman's life are epitomized in Nirmala. The cruel hypocrisy of society, the evil of dowry, and the complications upon complications resulting from an incompatible match, all came vividly to life and found a voice in this book.
