Abstract

The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme rechristened subsequently after Mahatma Gandhi to become the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), marks a transformative shift in development practice and politics in India. As one of the most comprehensive and popular flagship social policies, NAREGA (as it is popularly called) was conceived to not only counteract rising rural poverty and rural migration but stimulate a deeper involvement of the rural poor in matters of their own development and in that way also with the state.
