Abstract

Western Dooars was covered in thick jungle and hills when the British took control of the region during the Anglo-Bhutanese War in 1865. Despite the appalling conditions and inherent difficulties among them, only a small number of tribal people from the Indo-Mongoloid group were able to dwell in the Duars area. Meches was one of Indo-Monologed tribes living in Dooars at that time. They have their own traditional society and culture. With the passage of time, there have been many changes in their traditional society and culture. Especially under the influence of the missionaries, many of them have left their own religion and converted to Christianity. I will thus make an effort to place their traditional way of life and culture in the context of history.
