Abstract

Girish Karnad has treated with the gender issues in most of the play. The issues of the gender discrimination in society and the oppression of women by the patriarchal order happen to form an important part of Karnad’s plays. Karnad portrays women enthused with feminism, struggling the unjust and unfair norms of the patriarchal order. The play ‘Naga-Mandala: A Play of Cobra’ is blend of a myth and a folk-tale. The play as both the concept of gender or sex chastity is the supreme virtue values for woman by patriarchal society in India. Which she expected to protected at the any cost of her life. In Naga-Mandala Karnad’s not only exposes male bigotry, the oppression of women, the discrimination done to them by men and patriarchal order but also sharply deflates the concept of chastity. The present paper aim to analysis the gender issues in Girish Karnad’s play Naga-Mandala the protagonist is Rani.
