Abstract

In competitive markets, start-ups or young enterprises play an important role, but their significance in merger control has typically been restricted to giving proof that a relevant market is expected to grow more competitive. Recent studies have found that the acquisition of a startup company can result in the loss of both competitive constraints, and a product (as when a retail acquisition results in a store closure). 'Killer acquisitions' have been coined to describe such transactions.
