Abstract

Self-help groups (SHG) are being promoted in India through various schemes or programmes, which are helping women in becoming socially, psychologically and economically empowered. It is one of the central issues during the process of development of rural women. Over the past decade, however, the number of SHGs has increased. The question is, however, how far it surpasses the objective of improving the socio-economic conditions of rural women who are deprived of essential resources and who are not self-sufficient.
