Abstract

Social movements form an inherent part of the contemporary societies. They act as a window to the world around. They help in forming opinions about governmental policies and social trends. This collective action is often directed against the State machinery, challenging the policies and actions of the institutional machinery. The collective action will only sustain and reach its intended destination when it is marked by a certain degree of organisation. These organised efforts are given a direction by an able leadership; participants share common ideologies and objectives. It is oriented towards bringing about a permanent change; however the characteristics of a social movement are not constant.
