Abstract

Persian poetry was one of the greatest achievements of medieval Indian literature; an enormous amount of verses in various genres, much of it of very high quality produced under the Mughal Emperors (1526A.D.–1857A.D.), especially Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir and Shahjahan. They were patrons of Persian poetry. Persian poetry was principally associated with the ruling class and aristocracy of Central Asian origin, who ruled many region of Indian subcontinent. The unprecedented recognition of art by the Mughal court and the Deccan rulers encouraged migration of large number of Persian poets to India from Persia and central Asia, converting the country into a veritable nest of singing birds.
