Abstract

Film making reached India as soon as it was showcased to eaurpeans by Lumiere brothers in France. The colonial officers, rich business men, photography enthusiasts and chroniclers of society and heritage took to it. The colonial rulers were already using photography as a weapon of colonial power, to visually establish in the mind of the 'native' Indians the supremacy of their riule, governance, and the European culture.
