Indian agriculture has made rapid progress in augmenting the foodgrain production from 51 million tonnes in 1950-51 to 297.50 million tonnes in 2020-21 which includes 120 million tonnes of paddy. Today India ranks second in production of paddy in the world. It is the main staple food for more than 60 percent of the world population and more so in the Asian countries. It has predominant role in the Indian economy accounting for more than 10 percent of the total agricultural exports of the country during 2000-01. The Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Agricultural Marketing Reforms suggested several measures for strengthening agricultural marketing system in the country in their report submitted in May, 2002, for benefiting the farming community from the new global market opportunities, to foster true competition among the market players and to enhance the share of farmers in the ultimate price of their agricultural produce.
