Abstract

A series of tin(IV) iodovanadate samples were synthesized by mixing aqueous solutions of 0.1 potassium iodate and 0.1 M sodium metavanadate into 0.1 M tin(IV) chloride at pH 1 under varying mixing ratios. The sample obtained by mixing ratio 3:1:1 of tin(IV) chloride, sodium metavanadate and potassium iodate was found to possess increased ion exchange capacity of 2.07 meq gm-1 for Na+ ion. The material was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction technique, ion exchange capacity for group 1 and group 2 metal ions of periodic table, pH titration, adsorption studies for various bivalent metal ions, resistance to various chemicals and effect of temperature on ion exchange capacity.
