Abstract

The inverse relation between informal work and level of development is one of the key puzzling features of under developing economies (UDCs), including India. Informality in the Indian labour market has increased despite respectable economic growth in the past few decades. Efforts for promoting the movement of workers from low-quality work to decent and stable employment are constrained by the lack of available evidence on the magnitude of such movement as well as factors governing it. This Study, in the context of India, would try to examine the magnitude and the factors responsible for these movements of workers from the lower tier of jobs to upper-tier jobs. This Study captures the movement from informal jobs to formal sector jobs by using logit regression models using data provided by the Indian Human Development Survey of two rounds (2005 and 2011-12).
