Abstract

In April 2020, the Pahari Speaking People (PSP) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) were provided 4 percent reservation in jobs and educational institutions under the category of Backward and Other Weaker Sections(B&OWS). Despite accepting this, the PSP remained dissatisfied. Notably, the PSP are engaged in the socio-political movement for ST status since the profiling of Gujjars as same in 1991. The PSP have based their demand for ST status on the socio-economic similarities they share with the Gujjar community. Whereas, Gujjars disagree with most of the parallels being drawn with PSP and characterize themselves as a distinct community. This article critically explores the PSPs demand for Tribal status and its impact on community identity formation and mobilization.
