HOOGHLY RIVER BANK – A HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY

Abstract

The Ganges River in its journey through West Bengal is known as Bhagirathi, named after Hindu mythological character Bhagirath. According to popular myth Bhagirath invited the heavenly river ‘Ganga’ to earth for the reincarnation of his forefathers. A sacred beliref system always runs along the course of Ganges River from its Himalayan birthplace to the Bay of Bengal where it ends its journey.
