Abstract

This article examines the academic arrangements provided in hostels managed by Government of Kerala for students from Scheduled Castes communities in a critical perspective. SC are one of the most under privileged sections of the Indian society. In many cases, their houses are not strong or safe enough and some are only partially completed. The hostel is most preferred by poor SC households where both parents are working, who will be forced to leave their girl children alone at home and they believe that their children will get better education in a safe and secure place. In this context hostels carry a huge social responsibility and inclusiveness. Hence it is necessary to enquire the basic facilities provided in the SC hostels and its functional aspects as well. This article focuses on hostel life, tuition system, availability of academic facilities, performance in exams, career development, hostel security etc, and also provides some suggestion for the future improvement.
