Abstract

In her ground breaking work Resistance Literature, Barbara Harlowe argues “The emphasis in the literature of resistance is on the political as the power to change the world (30). Saleem Haddad’s Guapa tells the tale of a gay Arab in an unnamed Arab country struggling to keep his hope amidst of an increasingly oppressive authoritarian state in the aftermath of a failed revolution. His sexuality makes his life all the more difficult to keep up the façade of manliness he is supposed to have.
