Abstract

The contribution of the ethnic writers adds to the complexity and richness of the twentieth century American literature. Of all the varied cultural and sub-cultural group, the blacks and the Jews have been the most concerned with problem of pluralist society. Whereas the blacks have been strident in registering their protest against racial discrimination, the Jews been strenuously moving from the circumference to the centre of the American social structure. Hunted by their traumatic, past, immigrant Jews from Spain, Portugal, Germany etc. have constantly tried to acquire a secure refuge from religious persecution. Their major problem remains that of assimilation and identity. , of achieving a general cultural adjustment with the predominantly Protestant ethos, together with an anxiety to come to terms with their Judaic heritage.
