Abstract

Causality and determinism go hand in hand. Causal determinism and Karmic determinism point to the underlying cosmic order (Rta). Freedom is the sine quanon of human action. In Buddhist framework there is unique reconciliation of Karmic determinism and Freedom. Though every action has its necessary consequences in form of bondage, human agent has the inherent potency to determine the course of action. Ignorance is the seminal cause of bondage. Karmic determinism, applied to human life takes the form of wheel of life (bhavachakra). Though Buddha begins with the note of pessimism he holds out the hope that every individual can attain the state of liberation here and now by pursuing the path of righteousness which is enunciated in form of eight-fold path. There is no necessity of invoking the grace of any super-natural entity.
