Abstract

No Detention Policy (NDP) is a significant feature of the Right to Education Act 2009. However, since its implementation, NDP has been continuously targeted for negatively impacting the quality of education in schools. Critiqued for reasons such as poor performance of children, limited accountability of teachers, and parents indifference; NDP is considered to be a regrettable decision of policymakers. One major argument used against NDP is that it enables children to get promoted to the next grade without acquiring the necessary literacy level, that is, reading and writing proficiency. Such promotions are damaging because children with limited literacy achievement are bound to fail in higher grades and hence are forced to drop out of the school system.
