Abstract

Energy sector in India is dominated by Government entities engaged in Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Power. For a developing nation, a robust power sector is essential for growth and social development. The distribution companies being the revenue generators are the most important link in the entire value chain. This study critically reviews India’s power distribution sector from a commercial perspective. Dismal financial performance of Discoms has jeopardized the performance of the entire value chain. Subsidies and debt relief by Government has done very little in improving the financials of Discoms.
