Abstract

One of the most controversial principles of International Environmental Law is the precautionary principle. The need and the pitfalls of the principle have been highlighted by many. The debate however cannot be said to have exhausted itself, as the precautionary principle has been welcomed, criticized and ignored all at once. The actual contents of the rule have been difficult to formulate, as most of the existing formulations appear to be a result of political compromise clouded by sovereign need and greed. The objective of this research paper is to make an effort in crystalizing the constituents of the precautionary principle.
