Abstract

Education has been globally recognised as one of the potent tools that can improve the human lives in terms of life expectancy, living standards and overall well being. It provides a basis for positive change and transformation of society. “Education has an acculturating role. It refines sensitivities and perceptions that contribute to national cohesion, a scientific temper and independence of mind and spirit - thus furthering the goals of socialism, secularism and democracy enshrined in our Constitution. In sum, education is a unique investment in the present and the future”(NPE, 1986/92, p. 4). .
