HOME ENVIRONMENT AND COGNITIVE ABILITY OF STUDENTS AT HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL

Abstract

Home is the social institution which influences the development of the child. The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between home environment and cognitive ability of higher secondary school students in Kanyakumari district. Home environment is the basic unit of society with the members of each unit finding mutual fulfillment leading to maturity. A sample of 400 students of standard XI and XII were selected for the survey to collect data for the study. Home Environment Inventory and cognitive ability test were the tools used for collecting data. The data were analyzed using the ‘t’ test and Correlation. The result of the study showed significant positive correlation between home environment and cognitive ability of higher secondary school students. If we are providing better home environment to our wards they will be able to reach in a high position. Findings also suggest that the variable home environment have a significant impact on the cognitive ability of students.
